INNOCENT VOICES
(Voces Inocentes)
Special Guest
Oscar Torres, Screenwriter, Producer
May 9, 2008
7:00PM
Oscar
Torres wrote the screenplay for the film based on his own experiences
in El Salvador during the Civil War. He will participate with the
audience in a discussion on his experience as a screenwriter and on his
struggle for survival in an environment marked by cruelty, violence,
and death.
A common practice for the Salvadoran military during
the decade of the 1980's was to "recruit" children as soon as they
turned 12 years old to become soldiers to fight against the rebel
forces (FMLN).
INNOCENT VOICES tells the story of Chava, an 11
year old boy living in Cuscatancingo, a small town in El Salvador
during the Civil War (1980-1992) which resulted in more than 75,000
deaths. Oscar Torres' experiences are revealed through Chava, whose
childhood represents a microcosm of the political conditions in the
country.
